Box Score HILO, Hawaii – Dominican men's soccer fell 3-0 to Hawaii Hilo in its final game on the islands Saturday at Paiea Stadium.
Both teams had 15 shots, but the Vulcans (1-13, 1-10 PacWest) held a 10-7 advantage in shots on frame.
Christian Lathrop made six saves after facing nine shots on goal in the first half. The defense stepped up in the second half allowing only one shot on goal in the period, but the Penguins (4-9-2, 1-8-2 PacWest) were unable to find the answer on offense.
After Lathrop started the game with three saves in the first 20 minutes of the game, Jesus Ortega opened the scoring for the Vulcans opened the scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute off a long ball from Jonathan Garcia. Ortega set up the second goal of the game finding teammate Bryan Renoso in front of the net in the 30th minute. Ortega then added his second goal of the game in the 35th on a give-and-go with Bradley Doyle.
Brendan Adame tried to cut into the lead with a shot on frame in the 41st minute, but Cassidy Dixon was there to make the save for Hilo. The Vulcans dropped back into defense in the second half and made it difficult for the Penguins to find room to shoot. Austen McGergor had the lone shot on frame for the Penguins in the period in the 66th minute, but Dixon made the save.
Dominican returns home Thursday to host Cal Baptist at noon PST at Kennelly Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
