Diego Vasquez and
Christian Lathrop led Dominican men's soccer to a 1-1 draw Wednesday against Hawai'i Pacific at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
Lathrop made eight saves in 110 minutes in goal for the Penguins (4-8-2, 1-7-2 PacWest) and Vasquez added the fourth goal of his season. The shots were nearly even with the Sharks (4-8-3, 2-7-2 PacWest) holding a narrow 17-14 edge with a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.
HPU applied some early pressure and after Lathrop pushed away a shot by Dean Phillips, Josch Cuerten collected the rebound to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead in the second minute. Dominican found its offensive footing in the 38th minute after senior
Austen McGregor challenged HPU's Daniel Arnoll for the first time of the game. Arnoll made the save and junior
Matt Case grabbed the rebound and put his shot toward the empty net, but a Shark defender cleared the ball before it crossed the goal line to preserve their 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half began as a defensive battle with a shot by each team in the first 15 minutes of the period. Sophomore
Colin Gunby sent a long pass in from the right wing to
Diego Vasquez who flicked it past the keeper for the equalizer. It was Gunby's second assist in as many games.
Arnoll and Lathrop each kept their nets clean for the next 30 minutes to send the game to extra time. The Penguins best shot at the game-winner came in the 91st minute when
Chase Goulart headed a ball toward the near post, but HPU's Chandler Schur made a diving, one-handed save to prevent the goal.
The Sharks took all their chances in the second extra period, but Lathrop made three saves in the 10-minute period to preserve the tie.
Dominican will wrap up its Hawai'i trip Saturday against Hawai'i Hilo at 3 p.m. HST at the UHH Soccer Field. Live stats will be available online.
