Penguins tie behind stout defense

Box Score BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer used a late own goal in regulation to draw with Notre Dame de Namur 1-1 Saturday afternoon at Koret Field.

The Penguins (3-7-2, 1-5-1 PacWest) were led by a strong defense and goalkeeping to take home the draw. The Argonauts (6-6-1, 3-4-1 PacWest) held a 20-8 advantage in shots and 13-4 in shots on goal, but were unable to beat the backline for Dominican. Keepers Gabriella Tassano and Alyssa Ramos both had five saves in net with their defense coming through for two more.

Notre Dame de Namur applied heavy pressure in the first half, but Dominican was up to the challenge as Tassano had four saves, including back-to-back saves in a 13-second span to end the first half. The Argonauts struck first in the 64th minute after Samantha Sanchez sent a long ball to Vanessa Sanchez and she beat Alyssa Ramos one-on-one for the 1-0 lead.

The Penguins answered five minutes later, as Mariah Meza took a ball down the right side of the box and her cross back into the middle was mishandled and ended in a NDNU own goal to tie the game back up.

Abigail Dyer had a chance to give the Argonauts back the lead in the 78th minute, but the Penguins back line cleared her shot before it had a chance to cross the goal line. Sami Clausen found some room in the 84th minute to give Dominican its first shot on goal, but Abigail Cebrero came up with the save for NDNU. Tianna Brown then had the best shot to give the Penguins the win in regulation in the 89th minute, but her shot hit the post and the teams headed to extra time.

After a defensive battle in the first overtime saw each team attempt only one shot on goal each, the offenses found more room in the final 10 minutes. Ramos came up with two saves for Dominican, and her defense came through once again to clear Alina Marinez's header to keep the Argonauts off the scoreboard. Keira Dagy had a chance for the Penguins in the 105th minute, but Cebrero was again there for the save.

Dominican will return home Thursday to host Holy Names at 2:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
