ROCKLIN, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer scored three times in the opening 21 minutes and added two more after halftime Saturday afternoon to roll past Jessup 5-1 at Warrior Field.
The Penguins improved to 5-3-1 while finishing with an 11-4 advantage in shots and putting seven attempts on goal. Jessup fell to 0-4-2.
Rylee Buesing made two saves in goal for Dominican as the Penguins limited the Warriors to three shots on frame. Dominican's dynamic duo of seniors,
Janae Schwan and
Carson Warfield, each had a goal and an assist in the victory, while Gulianna McCarty finished with a pair of assists.
Dominican opened the scoring in the ninth minute after
Janae Schwan danced around a pair of defenders before poking the ball to
Brisa Navarrete at the top of the box. Navarrete squared up her shot and drove it into the upper-left corner for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Penguins doubled the advantage in the 18th minute when
Carson Warfield won the ball from a defender and carried it straight up the middle, drawing the defense toward her before slipping a pass to a wide-open
Lyric Gomez-Muniz coming up the left side. Gomez-Muniz buried the chance at the near post for her first goal of the year. Less than three minutes later, Dominican made it 3-0 when Schwan received a pass from McCarty near at the top of the six-yard box and took a step past a defender and buried the close range attempt.
The pressure continued almost immediately after the break.
Riley Gergurich intercepted a pass in the 51st minute and dribbled toward the top-right corner of the 18-yard box before chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. The keeper mistimed her jump, allowing the shot to fall inside the far post for Gergurich's first goal of the season and a 4-0 lead. Warfield added Dominican's fifth and final goal in the 58th minute after combining with McCarty on a give-and-go. Warfield sprinted beyond the back line, took a touch past the goalkeeper and finished into the empty net for her second goal of the season.
Jessup broke through in the 74th minute when Karlee Lywandowsky scored directly from a free kick near the top-left corner of the 18-yard box, sending the attempt inside the near post to make it 5-1, but there was no overcoming the large lead.
Dominican will return to the pitch Saturday as it opens PacWest play on the road against Westmont at Thorrington Field in Santa Barbara with a noon kickoff.
