Box Score BELMONT, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer fell 1-0 in a tightly contested game Saturday with Notre Dame de Namur at Koret Field.
The team stats remained mostly even between the two teams for most of the match with the Argonauts (10-1-2, 6-1-1 PacWest) holding a 16-11 edge in shots and 9-7 in shots on goal.
Wilson Briggs was efficient for the Penguins (3-8, 0-7 PacWest) registering four shots with all of them on frame.
Esteban Beruman had the first shot on goal for either team in the 13th minute, but
Wyatt Walsh made the save for the Penguins to keep the game even. Briggs found room on the other side five minutes later for the Penguins, but Javier Santana made the save for the Argonauts.
Beruman opened the scoring in the 21st minute taking a shot from 25-yards out on the break to make it 1-0 in favor of NDNU. Briggs had a shot to even the match moments later, but was unable to beat Santana for the goal.
Walsh kept Dominican in the game making saves in the 34th and 43rd minutes to keep it a one score game heading into the break.
The Penguins pressed early in the second half for the equalizer as
Luke Raley headed a ball on frame and Deigo Vasquez challenged Santana in the 49th minute, but both shots were saved. Briggs looked to equalize again for Dominican in the 64th minute, but was denied by Santana and
Damian Cortez's shot on the ensuing corner went high.
Raley had the final shot at the tie in the 83rd minute, but Santana made the save on his header to thwart the Penguins.
Dominican will return Thursday to Kennelly Field to host Holy Names at noon PDT. Live stats and video will be available online.
