Ikeora's program-record 43 points power Penguins past ART U

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Sandra Ikeora continued her highlight-reel season on Saturday in Dominican University of California's 96-82 win over Academy of Art.

The junior was simply unstoppable and dropped 43 points against the Urban Knights (8-5/4-1 PacWest). She poured in layup after layup on 19-of-29 shooting. Ikeora also added six rebounds, four blocks, and two steals, though she did snap her streak of six consecutive double-doubles. Ikeora's 43 points set a new single-season scoring record, which was previously at 37 points by Alyssa Weatherd '16. It was also the first 40-point game for a PacWest women's player since Dixie State's Haley Holmstead had 42 points in Dec. 2013. Ikeora now holds both the single-game scoring and rebounding records, having reeled in 25 rebounds earlier in the season.

The Penguins (8-7/4-4 PacWest) led 10-3 early but trailed 23-19 at the end of the first quarter. The Penguins opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run but headed into the locker room tied at 45-45. Anjelica Collins' midrange jumper capped another 7-0 run in the third quarter and forced ART U, trailing 57-52, to call timeout. Dominican didn't relinquish the lead and grew the gap to as large as 18.

Dominican outscored the Urban Knights 58-14 in the paint and in doing so handed ART U its first conference loss. When Ikeora headed to the bench in foul trouble, Taylor Donnot came off the bench and picked up the slack with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Collins, making her first career start, sparked the Penguins with five assists, five rebounds, and a steal in 33 minutes. Vanessa Cruz and Diza both added to the mix offensively with nine points apiece and Jade Castro added six points on a pair of three-pointers.

The Urban Knights had four players in double digits. Rodericka Ware paced ART U with 22 points on eight three-pointers. Alana Simon scored 17 points and Jazzlyn Brewster added 15 points. Hayley Pryor had 11 points in the loss.

Dominican heads to Dixie State on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. in Utah, then returns home versus Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 14 for Gold Rush Night. The first 100 fans to attend that game will receive a Dominican Basketball t-shirt courtesy of Gold Rush Jewelers.
