ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team outlasted Dixie State 72-63 in a see-saw battle on Wednesday.
The Penguins jumped out to a 10-2 lead and led 17-9 by the end of the first quarter. However, the Trailblazers outscored the Penguins 24-14 in the second quarter to take a 33-31 lead. Ikeora and
Alanna Scott combined for a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter but found themselves back down one headed into the fourth quarter but outscored DSU by 10 points in the final 10 minutes.
Sandra Ikeora, coming off of a program single-game record 43 point effort, stole the show yet again. The junior forward, who has been nominated for HERO Sports HERO of the Week (vote
here), poured in 34 points on 10-of-19 shooting and tallied her 10th double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. She also had seven steals, an assist, and a block. Ikeora leads the PacWest in scoring (22.3 ppg) and rebounding (12.4 rpg).
Dominican's defense clamped down in the second half, where the Penguins (9-7/5-4 PacWest) limited the Trailblazers (2-13/2-7 PacWest) to just 5-of-27 (18.5 percent) shooting and 30 percent (18-of-60) for the game. Matt Ventling and Ali Franks each scored 15 points apiece for the Trailblazers. Venting was 8-of-8 from the free throw line and Franks led all players with 14 rebounds.
In addition to Ikeora,
Alanna Scott added 11 points off of the bench.
Natalie Diaz scored nine points and
Anjelica Collins tallied seven points and seven rebounds, both career highs for the sophomore.
Dominican returns home versus third-place Hawai'i Pacific (8-3/5-1 PacWest) on Saturday, Jan. 14 for Gold Rush Night.
