SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team was unable to recover from an ice-cold third quarter in a 75-54 loss to Point Loma on Thursday night.
Third-place Point Loma (12-2/6-1 PacWest) broke out for a 28-point third quarter after scoring 28 points total in the first half. That gave them a 56-43 lead and the Penguins never recovered. Dominican, who led 29-28 at the half, scored just 25 points in the second half, including 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Sandra Ikeora tallied her sixth consecutive and ninth double-double of the season. She had nine points and five rebounds in the first quarter, which helped the Penguins to an early 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. She finished with game-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out with three minutes to go. Outside of the junior's 8-for-11 night, the Penguins struggled offensively. As a team, Dominican shot just 34.0 percent (16-of-47), including 28.6 percent (6-of-21) in the second half. The Penguins went just 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Natalie Diaz added eight points and five rebounds.
Jade Castro had seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Alex Brunk, despite going 0-for-5 from deep, was the difference in the game with a team-high 21 points for the Sea Lions. Madison White added 15 points and Kassidy Gengenbacher scored 11 points. Roya Rustamzada scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
