SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team dominated play but a late lapse in defense almost cost the Penguins in an eventual 1-1 double overtime draw versus Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday in the two teams' PacWest opener.
Dominican dominated possession in regulation but the Vulcans (2-2-2/0-0-1 PacWest) capitalized in the 77th minute thanks to quick work by Tiera Arakawa. The UHH forward intercepted the ball at midfield and broke away for a counter down the left side for a one-on-one that Dominican (0-2-3/0-0-1 PacWest) goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos was unable to stop. However, Vulcans reserve Dior Motas made a costly foul on Dominican midfielder
Michelle Li on the right side of the box in the 83rd minute. That set up a penalty kick for
Stephanie Pawek, who buried the shot to her left past a diving Jenna Hufford for Pawek's third goal of the season and the equalizer.
Pawek had another shot in the final minute of regulation that Hufford stopped. The Vulcans attempted the only shot of the first overtime, which sailed high in the 94th minute. Motas took a shot in the 106th minute that also went high.
The Penguins outshot the Vulcans 13-9 and placed nine shots on goal to UHH's half dozen. Ramos made five saves in a full 110-minute effort. Hufford made eight saves and also played the entire match.
The Penguins will look for their first win on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. versus Hawai'i Pacific. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
