SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team opened PacWest Conference play with a sweep (25-8, 25-21, 25-16) of Holy Names on Friday night.

Dominican (5-4/1-0 PacWest), which opened the season on a four-match win streak only to lose its next four matches, got back on track by setting the tempo early. The Penguins went down 2-0 but quikcly found their composure and cruised to a 25-8 victory in set one on an impressive .522 hitting percentage. Set two was a tighter affair as the Hawks (1-8/0-1 PacWest) grabbed a 9-5 lead only to see Dominican even the set at 11-11. The teams exchanged points until Dominican pulled away with four consecutive points to take a 2-0 lead.  Dominican used a 8-1 run to finish out set three and earn its first sweep of the season.

Cat Thomason led the Penguins with a career-high 10 kills. Brittany Latigue added nine, and Aimee Steinwand and Susanna Pilkerton each contributed eight in an even offensive attack. Hannah Smith dished out 29 assists while libero Amanda Lee had a team-high 14 digs. Kate Anderson made her college debut and recorded a service ace and three digs.

Melissa Munley led the Hawks with nine kills. Libero Sabina Gerard had a team-high 18 digs.

Dominican is right back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. versus Academy of Art.
