SAN RAFAEl, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team made it a winning weekend with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-14, 25-16) victory over Academy of Art on Saturday in PacWest play.
The Penguins (6-4/2-0 PacWest) looked vulnerable after squandering an early lead in set one. ART U (1-8/0-1 PacWest) erased a 10-6 Penguins lead and tied the set 14-14 on a Melissa Brum service ace. Dominican regained the lead, 23-20, but three kills and a pair of service aces gave the Urban Knights the early match lead. Dominican didn't let the Urban Knights get close in set two. The Penguins streaked to an 11-3 lead and finished the set on an impressive 13-1 run to even the match at one set apiece. The Penguins finished set four on a 7-1 run and carried the momentum into set four, where they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and scored the final four points of the match.
Kate Even and
Aimee Steinwand led the Penguins with 11 kills apiece.
Cat Thomason added nine and
Brittany Latigue had eight kills. Libero
Amanda Lee had a team-high 21 digs and was one of four players in double digits (
Zoe Burgess 11, Steinwand 10,
Kate Anderson 10).
Hannah Smith dished out 38 assists.
Brum led all players with 16 kills. Kabrina Speakman added 14 kills for ART U but was a target of Dominican's service all day. Libero Lyndsay Mlnar had a match-high 25 digs but made seven reception errors.
On Monday, Sept. 19, Dominican heads to Fresno Pacific (2-4/0-2 PacWest) for a 7 p.m. match.
