POMONA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell 2-1 in a close non-conference match at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night.
The Penguins (0-3-0) outshot CPP (3-1-1), last season's NCAA Division II national runner-up and the CCAA favorite this season, 4-3 in a scoreless first half but were ultimately outshot 12-10.
Zach Bush got the Penguins on the board in the 77th minute on the assist from
Austen McGregor. Dominican continued to attack and had a pair of corner kicks and
Connor Murphy's shot in the 86th minute was blocked. A CPP foul in the 55th minute set up a free kick but
Mark Caliguire's shot sailed high. A minute later, Arturo Carrillo-Contreras had his shot saved and the Penguins didn't convert on the ensuing corner kick. In the 59th and 63rd minutes, Sergi Monso scored hist first two goals of the season to give CPP a 2-0 lead. Both goals came on the left side and were assisted by Jordan Jackmon and Kevin Martinez.
Matt Case received two yellow cards, which means that the sophomore forward will miss the Penguins' next contest.
Roberto Macias, who received a red card in the Penguins' previous match, will be back on the active roster. Dominican heads to Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., then hosts William Jessup its final non-conference match before PacWest play on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
