SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team fired off 23 shots but concluded its season opener in a 0-0 draw with Menlo College.
Dominican's 23 shots were the sixth most by the team in a single match since Dominican joined the NCAA in 2009. Dominican (0-0-1) dominated play and came out firing with the first four shots. Dominican had 11 shots on goal, led by three apiece from redshirt freshman
Michelle Li and sophomore
Rachel Stowell, who made her first appearance since a knee injury ended her season last September. Li led all players with seven total shots. Stowell and junior
Ivy Torres each had four apiece. The Oaks (2-1-1) were limited to eight shots, three on goal, and went over 40 consecutive minutes without a shot.
Freshman goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos relieved sophomore
Gabriella Tassano at the half. Ramos only made two saves but one was a true game-saver. In the 92nd and 94th minutes, the Oaks fired off a pair of shots, one of which came within inches of crossing the goalline but Ramos got the edge of her boot in the way for the save.
Wi had a shot in overtime that sailed wide and another in the second overtime period that was blocked. Senior
Stephanie Pawek saw her shot in the 102nd minute saved. Menlo goalkeeper Kaylin Swart tallied up 11 saves in the draw.
The Penguins will head to San Francisco State on Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon. The Gators, who are picked to finish seventh out of the 13-team CCAA, dropped their season opener 2-1 to Central Washington. Live
