NAMPA, Idaho — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team battled in its season opener on Thursday but the game's only goal went against the Penguins, who fell 1-0 to Concordia (Oregon).
The lone goal came in the opening minutes. In the third minute, from about 16 yards out, Trent Lowe found Kieran McMinn, who was five yards from the goal. McMinn took the cross and scored going to his left.
Dominican had plenty of scoring opportunites. The Penguins dominiated possession in the second half and began the frame with four quick shots and a pair of corner kicks. In all, the Penguins tallied 18 shots with six of those on goal. The Penguins would have had even more scoring opportunitites but were called offsides half a dozen times. Starter
Jordan Zamora and reserves
Bryan Juarez and Austin McGregor each had three shots apiece.
Defensively, Dominican held Concordia to nine shots by nine different players, four on goal, a promising sign for a team that allowed over nine shots on goal per match a season ago.
Goalkeeper
Oscar O'Con made three saves but was saddled with the loss in a complete-game effort.
The Penguins are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. Pacific) versus Northwest Nazarene. The Crusaders tied in their first match of the season, 2-2, versus Hawai'i Pacific. Live video and stats for that match will be available
