TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a pair of games, 5-2 to Concordia (Ore.) and 7-5 to Saint Martin's.
The Penguins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Concordia (Ore.) (20-13) thanks to
Catlyn Cavender's two-out, bases-loaded infield single. In the bottom of the third, Cavender preserved the lead when she laid out to her right to keep a liner from scoring the runners at second and third. Concordia tied the game in the fourth on an unearned run.
Tori Johnson doubled with two outs and
Katelyn Harden singled her home to put the Penguins back in front in the fifth. Concordia used two-run fifth and sixth innings to take control of the game.
Dominican jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Saint Martin's but injuries forced the Penguins to turn to a depleted bullpen. Dominican grabbed a 2-0 lead with just one out, which chased SMU starter Loryn Williams (11-3), and led 3-0 by the end of the inning. Dominican starter
Katelyn Harden tossed three scoreless innings but was forced to the dugout after she injured her hamstring legging out a single in the bottom of the third. In the fifth inning, freshman
Keely Bowlan walked and
Haley Cheek followed her first career home run to make it 5-0. However, things fell apart in the sixth inning when SMU struck for seven runs on six hits with a rally started by a three-run homer by Kim Nelson.
On Sunday, Dominican closes out play at the Tournament of Champions versus MSU Billings at 10 a.m. and Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at
