Cavender homers, Penguins split at UH Hilo

HILO, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California softball team handed UH Hilo its first conference loss of the season and split Saturday's doubleheader to begin the Penguins' 10-game road trip to the islands. Dominican took game one 6-3 and dropped game two 10-2 in five innings.

Junior Catlyn Cavender launched a first-inning homer to give Dominican (4-13/2-4 PacWest) a quick 1-0 lead in game one. Cavender sparked a rally again in the fourth with a leadoff single. She advanced on Tayler Munoz's sacrifice bunt and made it to third on Kate Harden's single through the left side. Karitza Reyes laid down a suicide squeeze and Cavender raced home to make it a 2-0 lead. Harden later scored on a Shannon Rodriguez single to right center and Keely Bowlan followed with an RBI double to left field to make it 4-0. The Penguins picked two more runs on throwing errors in the fifth and seventh innings.

Senior Ashlyn Moriarity (1-2) earned her first win since coming back from Tommy John surgery that ended her junior campaign. She threw five innings and cruised through the first three before giving up an unearned run in the fourth inning. Her one mistake came in the sixth inning. After a leadoff single from Mari Kawano, Cristina Menjivar chased the senior with a two-run homer that cut the lead to 6-3. Harden entered the circle and recovered from a leadoff walk by getting an inning-ending double play. She induced another ending-inning double play in the seventh to pick up the save. Billi Derleth took the loss for UHH as Dominican touched her for a season-high 11 hits.

In game two, the Vulcans (17-6/9-1 PacWest) roughed up starter Gaby Katafias (2-2) for four runs in three innings. The Penguins answered in the fourth with a Harden RBI double and Haley Cheek RBI single in to cut the lead in half. The Vulcans put up back-to-back three-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings to invoke the run rule. Danielle Wilson (8-2) earned the win for the Vulcans.

Dominican will now head to O'ahu to face Chaminade University on Monday, March 7 at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at Central Oahu Regional Park.
