Softball wins in extras, splits at BYU-Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California softball team split its PacWest doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii on Friday. Dominican won game 4-3 in 10 innings and fell 8-2 in the nightcap.

The Penguins (8-15/6-6 PacWest) needed extra innings to win game one. With the international tiebreaker invoked, Tayler Munoz was placed at second base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch but was forced to hold on a lineout double play that nearly ended the rally. However, she was able to score on a misplayed ball by BYU-Hawaii (7-15/3-9 PacWest) shortstop Alexa Barrett. Angelina Lombardi (1-1) got the much-needed shutdown inning to lock up her first win of the season. She scattered three hits in four scoreless innings. Kelsey Goodner struck out three in six innings and allowed three runs, two earned.

Dominican grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first after Tori Johnson led the game off with a single. She moved into scoring position thanks to a passed ball and came around to score on a wild pitch. Alyssa Lanza led off the fifth with a single, then stole second. The throw hit Lanza and landed between infielders, neither of who picked up the ball. Lanza advanced to third safely and later scored on a Tayler Munoz sacrifice bunt to double the lead to 2-0. A Seasiders sacrifice fly in the sixth trimmed the lead in half and another in the seventh tied the game. A Dominican sacrifice fly from Karitza Reyes gave the Penguins a 3-2 lead only to see the game tied by an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.

It was all Seasiders in game two. BYU-Hawaii capitalized on five Dominican errors and scored in all but two innings. Dominican scored in the fourth on Marissa Cordisco's sacrifice fly and in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Catlyn Cavender. Gaby Katafias (3-3) had her second shortest start of the season. She allowed seven runs, only two earned, over three and two thirds innings. Chelsie Childs Lambert (2-3) earned the win for the Seasiders.

Dominican closes out the 10-game trip to Hawaii on Saturday, March 12 with another doubleheader with the Seasiders. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. in Laie, Hawaii.
