CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Chico State on Sunday, 5-3 and 6-1.
Dominican (1-5) took a 2-0 lead in game one. The Penguins capitalized on a pair of errors.
Catlyn Cavender led off the second with a base hit and later scored on an error. In the fifth,
Alyssa Lanza singled and scored on another fielding error. Senior
Ashlyn Moriarity's start – her first since Tommy John surgery that cut her junior campaign short — went to waste. The senior allowed just one hit in 3.1 innings of work with two strikeouts. The Wildcats (3-1) did all of their damage in the fifth inning off of
Angelina Lombardi (0-1), who allowed all five runs after pitching a perfect fourth inning. Dominican got a run back in the seventh on
Tori Johnson's two-out single through the left side that plated
Dahlen Dennis but Chico State reliever Cheyanne Sandoval came in and recorded the final out of the game. Haley Gilham (1-1) eaarned the win for the Wildcats.
In game two, the Wildcats grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and extended the lead to 5-0 in the third and 6-0 by the fifth. Dominican's run came in the sixth on
Tayler Munoz's two-out single to right field, which scored
Katelyn Harden, who reached base on a walk.
Emily Ginn drew another walk that loaded the bases but Chico State reliever Cailin Garmon got a fly out to end the inning. Brooke Langeloh (2-0) went five innings and earned the win for the Wildcats.
Kelsey Goodner (0-2) allowed five runs over three innings and took the loss for the Penguins.
