SAN DIEGO — The Dominican University of California women's basketball nearly erased a 20-point deficit but ran out of time in a close 72-69 PacWest loss at Point Loma on Thursday night.

Allyssa Weatherd game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The senior entered the game ninth in DII in field goal percentage and raised that to 59.6 percent. That gives her 872 career points, moving her past

Ikeora got the Penguins on the board first but the Sea Lions (17-5/10-4 PacWest) led the larger part of the first quarter and led 21-20 at the end of the quarter. The Sea Lions stretched the lead to 40-29 by halftime thanks to an 11-2 run to close out the half. The momentum continued for the Sea Lions, who scored the first seven points of the second half. The lead grew to 20 with 5:02 to go in the third but the Penguins battled back.

The Penguins went 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from the field and made five free throws to trim the lead down to three, 65-62, with under two minutes to play. Dominican was forced to foul and Point Loma went 7-of-10 from the free throw line over the final two minutes. The Penguins remained close and Weatherd hit a three-pointer to keep it close but time expired without another opportunity to tie.
