RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team dropped back-to-back games for just the second time this season on Saturday with an 80-59 loss at No. 4 California Baptist.
Sandra Ikeora recorded her eighth double-double of the season with game-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds for the Penguins (15-8/11-5 PacWest) but it wasn't enough to slow the nationally-ranked Lancers (22-1/14-1 PacWest), who won their 15th straight game.
Allyssa Weatherd, who entered the game ranked ninth in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage (59.6 percent), raised her percentage slightly to 59.7 with a 5-of-8 shooting night. She went 11-of-12 from the free throw line and finished with 21 points. Dominican only received 11 points elsewhere, with six coming from
Jade Castro in her first start of the season.
The Penguins trailed 18-17 after the first quarter but CBU quickly pushed the lead to nine in the second quarter and headed into halftime with a 41-27 advantage. The lead ballooned to 20 in the third quarter, though Dominican finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 58-44. Dominican kept things going and made it a 10-0 run. That trimmed the lead to 58-50 with 8:29 to go. A pair of Weatherd free throws before the eight-minute media timeout trimmed the lead to seven, 59-52. However, the Lancers came out of the huddle on fire and used three three-pointers to propel a 13-0 run. That pushed the gap back to 20 and CBU led by as many as 23 in the final minute and a half.
Four CBU starters reached double digits, led by Cassidy Mihalko's 19 points and nine rebounds. Courtney Nelson added 16, Kamille Diaz had 15 points. Megan Frerer scored 10 points and tallied nine rebounds.
The Penguins will be tested again on Monday, Feb. 15 at No. 19 Azusa Pacific. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
