SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team played another close non-conference game on Sunday but a late cold streak ended in a 67-60 loss to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Dominican (2-5) led 60-56 with 2:20 to go but the Toros (5-2) finished the game on an 11-0 run and silenced the Penguins offense. Dominican trailed 33-30 at the half but evened the score at the 11-minute mark, 45-45, when a
Henry Uwadiae block led to a jumper by the Penguins center at the other end. Glenn Baral answered with a three for the Toros but the Penguins marched right back and took a 53-52 lead on a pair of
Russell Davis free throws, then pushed the lead to four on a
Jeremiah Gray three-pointer. A couple of Dominican fouls allowed the Toros to even the score though and another Davis free throw, followed by an Uwadiae three-point play gave Dominican its final lead of the game. The Penguins only got off two more shots and turned the ball over twice down the stretch.
The Penguins shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field but shot just 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free throw line. Gray scored a team-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Uwadiae added 11 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Quentin Mendoza added 10 points and
Ryo Tawatari scored nine points.
CSUDH held a slight edge from the field at 46.9 percent (23-of-49) and won the game at the free throw line, where they went 17-of-24 (70.8 percent). Vincent Golson led all players with 18 points. Justin Sadler added 16 points and Dharion Turner came off the bench for 11 points. The Toros also won the rebounding battle, 25-17.
Sunday was Star Wars™ Day in the Igloo and Dominican raised over $900 for Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event featured appearances by members of the
501st Legion Golden Gate Garrison and
Mandalorian Mercs Teren Clan, as well as the lovable droid BB-8 and Jedi Master Yoda. Four-time Academy Award winner Ben Burtt — the supervising sound editor, sound designer, and re-recording mixer at Skywalker Sound – helped host a halftime game in which he picked the best homemade sound effect
