SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team dominated BYU-Hawaii, 83-65, in the two teams' final meeting on Saturday night in the Conlan Center.
BYU-Hawaii (3-7/1-3 PacWest), which reached the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2011, is discontinuing NCAA athletics after the 2016-17 season. While the Seasiders win the all-time series, the Penguins finish with back-to-back wins over the Seasiders, having also won the final matchup in Hawaii last season, 78-68.
The Penguins raced to a 6-2 lead and forced a Seasiders timeout.
Josh Ramirez, who made his return to the court for the first time since Nov. 12, entered after the timeout and wasted no time scoring. Less than a minute back in action, the senior forward scored on a layup from
Ryo Tawatari. Tawatari, who matched a season-high six assists, also scored a game-high 16 points. After the Seasiders grabbed a 12-10 lead on Shad Watson's layup,
Reverend Maduakor's layup evened the game back at 12-12 Tawatari buried back-to-back threes that gave Dominican the lead for good. The lead dwindled to one with eight minutes to go but
Jordan Tribble's dunk pushed the lead back to three and there was little threat to the lead after.
The Penguins scored 38 points inside the paint. That's remarkable enough on its own but especially so given that the Penguins only had two field goals from midrange. Dominican shot the ball well from long range as well, at a 43.5 percent (10-of-23) clip. Defensively, Dominican won the rebounding battle 45-30 and held the Seasiders to 35.8 percent (24-of-67) shooting. Center
Henry Uwadiae protected the rim well and had a season-high five blocks.
In all, Dominican led for nearly 38 minutes and by as many as 19.
Quentin Mendoza had 12 points, all on three-pointers.
Seth Turner had 12 points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes after being eased in the past two games. Maduakor added 11 points in the win. Ramirez scored seven points, reeled in a team-high nine rebounds, and dished out four assists in 24 minutes of work.
The Seasiders were led by Watson's 16 points. Tanner Nelson added 12 points. Caeleb Roney had a team-high seven rebounds.
Next week, Dominican heads off for its annual Hawaii, where the Penguins will face the other three Hawaiian teams in the PacWest: Hawai'i Pacific on Dec. 14, Chaminade on Dec. 16, and Hawai'i Hilo on Dec. 19.
