SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — For the first time this season, the Dominican University of California women's soccer team fell in extra time in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Chaminade.
With 1:02 remaining, defender
Keira Dagy was issued a yellow card for a slide tackle right in the box. That forced freshman goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos to face a penalty kick by Caitlin Tatemichi but Ramos guessed the other way.
Tatemichi provided most of the Silverswords' (3-10-1/3-7-1 PacWest) offense with four of their six shots and three shots on goal. The Penguins (7-5-4/6-3-2 PacWest) dominated possession and outshot Chaminade 18-6.
Bailey Kiser had four shots on goal while reserves
Ivy Torres,
Bri Rodrigues,
Melissa Stoakley, and Yyvonne Martinez all had one apiece.
It was a costly loss for the Penguins, who can finish no higher than sixth place now. Thursday's match was the Penguins' seventh double overtime match of the season. Dominican tied in its first four matches and pulled through for wins on a pair of
Rachel Stowell game-winners in the previous two double overtime.
Dominican was without its top two goal scorers,
Michelle Li and
Mariah Meza. Li was issued a red card in Dominican's win at Dixie State and will also miss Saturday's match. Meza tallied her fifth yellow card in that win, meaning she had to sit out on Thursday.
The Penguins will look to notch their first winning season in the Division II era on in the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m. vs. BYU-Hawaii. It is the final soccer match for BYU-Hawaii, as the entire athletics program is being discontinued after the 2016-17 season. Saturday is also Senior Day for Dominican, where the Penguins will honor
Cynthia Smith,
Stephanie Pawek, and Stoakley. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
