SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The 2016 Dominican University of California women's soccer season came to an end with a 1-0 loss to visiting BYU-Hawaii.
BYU-Hawaii (5-10-1/5-7-1 PacWest), which is disbanding its athletics program after the 2016-17 season, played spoiler in its final match as Dominican (7-8-4/6-6-2 PacWest) looked to earn its first winning season in the Division II era. The Penguins finished in seventh place in the 14-team PacWest, one spot higher than where they were picked in the preseason coaches poll.
The lone goal came in the 29th minute on Sydney Eddy's header. After an even first half in which both teams attempted five shots, the Penguins held a 6-3 shot advantage in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net. Dominican, which came into the match averaging over four corner kicks per match, were denied any attempts by the BYU-Hawaii defense.
Katrina Cline and
Yvette Lozano attempted the Penguins two shots on goal. Dominican was without one of its leading scorers,
Michelle Li, who was not in uniform after being issued a red card in the Penguins' 1-0 win at Dixie State.
In a pregame ceremony, the Penguins honored their three seniors —
Stephanie Pawek, Cythia Smith, and
Melissa Stoakley.
