SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California faced another scoreless contest but a late goal from freshman
Luke Raley lifted the Penguins to a 1-0 victory over visiting Chaminade on Thursday.
Raley's goal came in the 88th minute on a recovered set piece. Raley booted a corner kick long but
Kyle Hoh saved the ball from going out on the far side and played the ball back toward the center, where
Austen McGregor settled the ball. He passed the ball down to
Chandler Roselli, who drew the defense towards him on the right side. He crossed the ball across the face of the goal back to the left side to a streaking Raley, who was unmarked after taking the corner kick. The freshman's shot glanced off a defender and into the top left of the net. The Penguins (4-12-1/4-7-1 PacWest), who outshot Chaminade (5-8-1/5-6-1 PacWest) 14-2, didn't face another threat in the final minutes and held on for the win. The Penguins dominated the offensive statistics, all despite being offsides six times.
In the eight minutes prior to the goal, the Penguins had a flurry of shots that nearly found the back of the net. Raley hit the post in the 80th minute,
Matt Case's shot from the close right was saved,
Austen McGregor hit the crossbar, and
Jordan Zamora fired a shot wide right.
Dominican closes out the 2016 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 5 at noon vs. BYU-Hawaii (5-6-4/4-5-3 PacWest), who the Penguins will look to pass in the standings on the final day of the season. That match marks the final match in program history for the Seasiders, as BYU-Hawaii is discontinuing its athletics program after the 2016-17 season. Saturday is also Senior Day, where Dominican's seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony —
