SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer season came to an end on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to visiting BYU-Hawaii.
The Seasiders (6-6-4/5-5-3 PacWest) played spoiler in their final match ever, as BYU-Hawaii is discontinuing its athletics program entirely after the 2016-17 season. Dominican fell to 4-13-1 overall and 4-8-1 in conference play, finishing in 11th place in the 14-team PacWest, which is where they were picked in a preseason coaches poll.
The match was decided in the span of six minutes in the second half. Daniel Corbett scored the match's first goal at 52 minutes. Dominican goalkeeper
Oscar O'con came out for loose ball but Corbett got a touch on the ball before O'con and scored on his second touch. Less than four minutes later, Dominican's
Matt Case scored on a similar play. He drove to the box from the left side and drew the keeper out, then broke towards the center of the goal and scored. BYU-Hawaii scored on a free kick in the 58th minute to take the lead for good.
Dominican outshot the Seasiders 11-6 but both teams attempted four shots on goal.
In a pregame ceremony, Dominican honored its five seniors —
Mark Caliguire,
Alex Herrera,
Roberto Macias, O'con, and
Chandler Roselli.
