Penguins ride big first half to victory over Humboldt State

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team used a 52-point first half to secure an 81-70 victory over Humboldt State in the Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.

The Dominican (3-3) offense responded quickly after being quieted on Saturday. The Penguins jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes and led by as much as 12 in the first quarter. Dominican poured it on in the second quarter and expanded the lead to 52-32 at halftime. The lead grew to 28 midway through the third quarter, though a 10-0 Jacks run over the next four minutes trimmed the lead to 69-51 headed into the final quarter. The Jacks trimmed the lead even more as Head Coach Tim LaKose emptied his bench.

Five Dominican players finished in double digits. Taylor Donnot, Sandra Ikeora, and Alanna Scott all reached that mark by the half. Ikeora led all players with 22 points. Donnot scored 16, and Scott added 14. Carly Holboke had 11 points off the bench and Ashley Sorensen recorded a double-double with 10 points and matched a career-high 12 rebounds.

Four HSU (1-6) starters reached double digits, led by Tyra Turner's 15 points.
