Ikeora's career night propels Penguins past Otters

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Sandra Ikeora was unstoppable in Dominican University of California's 70-66 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday.

The Preseason All-PacWest selection poured in 22 points and set a program record in the Division II era with 25 rebounds. She also added five blocks, three steals, and one assist. That broke the mark previously set by Jasmine Cox in 2014.

Combined with 19 points from Taylor Donnot, 13 points from Carly Holboke, and a dozen from Jade Castro, it was enough for the Penguins to pull away. Donnot and Holboke were both active on the glass also with eight rebounds apiece. Dominican fended off an Otters (3-3) defense that held the Penguins to 32.4 percent (24-of-74) shooting. The Penguins didn't help their cause at the free throw line, where they shot 44.4 percent (16-of-36).

Dominican was held scoreless for the first five minutes and trailed 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. Ikeora got the Penguins going in the second quarter with jumper, though a Victoria Dorn three-pointer pushed the lead back to eight with five minutes to go. Ikeora answered on the other end with a three-point play, then Alexis Price pulled the Penguins within three with a fastbreak layup. Donnot sank a pair of free throws and an Ikeora putback gave the Penguins a 25-24 lead with 2:41 to go in the half. A pair of Holboke free throws capped a 13-0 run and Dominican led 31-30 at the half.

The Penguins added a point to their lead in the third quarter at 50-48. Dominican pushed the lead to 59-50. An Emily Harden three-pointer trimmed the lead to three with 33 seconds to go but Castro iced the game with pair of clutch free throws with 14 seconds left.

McKenna Hill led CSUMB with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dorn added 12 points and Alexa Sperling had 10 points.

Dominican begins PacWest Conference action versus Holy Names on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live with live audio provided by the student broadcasters of Penguin Radio.
