HAYWARD, Calif. — A second quarter drought was the difference in a 78-72 loss for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team at Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
Dominican (2-3) led 16-13 after a quarter but was outscored 27-14 in a second quarter that was punctuated by an Pioneers (3-2) run. Dominican pulled to within five in the third quarter but a layup and three-pointer pushed the lead back to 10. Two more Pioneers layups pushed the lead to 14. The lead ballooned to 18 in the fourth quarter and Dominican never got any closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
The Pioneers held Dominican to a season-low 34.4 percent (21-of-61) and shot 50 percent (32-of-64), a season-high against the Dominican defense. The Penguins' 62 points was well below the team's 79.0 scoring through the first four games of the season.
Taylor Donnot came off the bench with a team-high 13 points for the Penguins.
Ashley Sorensen added a career-high 11 points and matched a season-high six rebounds.
Sandra Ikeora added nine points and fouled out for the third time this season.
Cal State East Bay was led by Shomari Harris, who was one of four Pioneers to reach double digits. She scored 17 points while Remy Puou added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Penguins continue play at the Thanksgiving Shootout on Sunday, Nov. 27 with a 2 p.m. game versus Humboldt State. Live

Dominican returns home on on Tuesday, Nov. 29 for a 5:30 p.m. game versus Cal State Monterey Bay, then begins PacWest Conference action on Thursday, Dec. 1 versus Holy Names.
