ARCATA, Calif. —
Jeremiah Gray scored a career-high 32 points but the Dominican University of California men's basketball team dropped an 87-84 decision at Humboldt State on a last-second three-pointer.
Gray's hot hand and free throws helped the Penguins (1-3) erase an 18-point deficit. HSU's (5-1) Will Taylor was whistled for a fourth foul with 5:28 to go and his fifth foul came in the form of a technical foul after he contested the call. Dominican made four free throws on that sequence and
Henry Uwadiae followed with a pair of his own to cut the lead to 73-72. Gray's three-pointer with 4:20 capped a 9-0 run and gave Dominican its first lead of the second half, 75-73. Dominican led by four thanks to
Ryo Tawatari but Lizotte answered with a three at the other end. With 37 seconds left, Tyras Rattler, Jr. missed the first of two free throws but tied the game at 84-84 with his second. That left the door open for the Penguins but Gray was defended well and
Quentin Mendoza's three-point attempt from the corner hit off the side of the backboard. Jack Kaub grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball to Nikhil Lizotte, who dribbled down and hit a three from the top right of the arc with one second remaining. The Penguins didn't get a shot off in the final second.
Dominican, still without starters
Josh Ramirez and
Seth Turner, trailed 48-34 at the half after committing 13 turnovers.
Gray was 8-of-12 from behind the arc and added eight rebounds and three steals. Tawatari had 19 points, five assists, and a steal. Mendoza added 13 points, three assists, and a steal.
Rattler scored a team-high 29 points on 12-of-14 free throw shooting. Calvin Young II added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Malik Morgan chipped in 16 points and Lizotte scored 14.
After Thanksgiving, Dominican will head south to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Nov. 25 for a 7 p.m. game.
