SEASIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team fell 73-72 on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
The game was a near-replay of events as Wednesday's loss at Humboldt State. The Penguins (1-4), still without starters
Josh Ramirez and
Seth Turner, fell behind by double digits, rallied back late in the second half, grabbed a lead, and fell in the final minute. Dominican trailed 41-35 at the half but the Otters opened on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 51-37. At the eight-minute mark, the deficit stood at 16. Dominican used a 13-0 run to cut the lead to three. Kevin Warren stopped the run with a three-pointer but
Quentin Mendoza made back-to-back threes to tie the game at 69-69 with two minutes to go. A foul and technical foul on Shawn Smith sent
Reverend Maduakor to the line, who made three of four to give Dominican a 72-71 lead. The missed free throw proved costly though, as Jahvon Johnson's jumper with 42 seconds was the difference. The Penguins had two chances for the win but came up short.
Maduakor matched a career-high 18 points.
Jeremiah Gray added 12 points and
Henry Uwadiae came off the bench for 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Johnson scored a team-high 16 points for the Otters. Julian Decree added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Dominican's next game is the PacWest opener, Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. versus Holy Names. Sunday, Dec. 4 is Star Wars™ Day versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. BB-8 will be in attendance, and there will be Star Wars™-themed games and a costume contest. Proceeds of ticket sales from Dec. 4 will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
