Fouls prove costly in loss to Sonoma State

BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team lost a double-digit lead and had four players foul out in an 87-84 loss to Sonoma State in the PacWest/CCAA Challenge hosted by Notre Dame de Namur.

Sonoma State, picked to finish tied for last in the CCAA, is off to a 2-0 start while the Penguins drop to 1-1 on the early season.

Dominican led 28-22 after a quarter and by as much as 15 in the second quarter. The Penguins held a 12-point advantage at halftime but Carly Gill's three-pointer with 40 seconds to go in the third quarter gave the Seawolves a one-point lead.

Alanna Scott hit a three-pointer to give the Penguins the lead early in the fourth quarter but Sonoma State grabbed a four-point lead and built the lead to eight with just under three minutes to play. A Marisa Mondave three-pointer, followed by a Vanessa Cruz steal and Sandra Ikeora three-point play cut the lead to two with under a minute to play. The Seawolves stayed in front thanks to a free throw but Alyssa Lorenzo's three-point attempt with time expiring didn't fall.

The Penguins were held to 37.3 percent (28-of-75) shooting and had four players — Taylor Donnot, Carly Holboke, Ikeora, and Scott — foul out while four others had three. In all, the two teams combined for 60 fouls and 71 free throws.

Carly Holboke had 11 first-half points and finished with a team-high 20 points. Donnot notched a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Ikeora had a double-double before the half and finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals.
