SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team used a strong second half to blow out San Francisco State 77-56 victory in the Penguins' home opener on Saturday.
The Penguins trailed 30-25 at halftime but used a 23-10 third quarter to grab control of the game. A pair of free throws from
Taylor Donnot and another from
Natalie Diaz pulled Dominican to within three, 40-37, and
Carly Holboke's three-pointer from the top of the arc at the two-minute mark gave the Penguins the lead. A pair of
Alexis Price steals led to free throws and Dominican led by eight at the end of the quarter.
The Gators (1-3) got two quick buckets to begin the fourth quarter but Dominican responded with an 14-0 run and led 64-44. The Penguins grew their lead to as large as 23 and Head Coach
Tim LaKose was able to empty his bench.
Sandra Ikeora poured in a game-high 19 points and reeled in five rebounds before fouling out with 3:25 to go.
Natalie Diaz scored 17 points and had a team-high seven rebounds. Holboke and
Taylor Donnot scored 12 points apiece. Price had eight points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
The Gators were held to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting. Jasmine Black scored a team-high 14 points for the Gators. Imani Smith added 12 points in the loss. Donae Moguel led all players with 14 rebounds.
