Resiliency on display in late comeback at Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team scored twice late, including one in the final 10 minutes, to top Holy Names 4-3 on Sunday.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 3-4-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the PacWest to move into the top half of the conference standings. Holy Names falls to 1-8-1 overall and 1-5-0 in conference action.

Mariah Meza found Bailey Kiser in the 23rd minute for Kiser's second goal of the season to begin the scoring action. The goal led until the 41st minute when a Dominican foul towards the right of the goal in the box resulted in penalty kick for the Hawks. Courtney Okazaki scored to her left past a diving Alyssa Ramos. Dominican grabbed the momentum right back thanks to Meza's goal with 42.6 seconds to go in the half. That put the Penguins up 2-1 but that lead didn't last long either. A Dominican foul proved costly yet again and resulted in a free kick in the 47th minute, which Okazaki used to tie the match, then Allie Sementelli found Krystal Gouveia on a corner kick in the 50th minute to give HNU a 3-2 advantage. Dominican nearly tied the game in the 54th minute when HNU was called for a foul in the box but Stephanie Pawek's shot slammed off the post. In the 65th minute, Ramos kept the differnce a goal with a jumping punchout. The Penguins continued to pressure the HNU defense over the next 10 minutes with four saved shots, then the Penguins found the breakdown they were looking for in the 79th minute. Michelle Li weaved through traffic and dished off to Ivy Torres, who dished off to the right side to a streaking Lily Dubuc, who buried the shot from the close right wing. Two minutes later, Meza dished ahead to Li, who froze the goalkeeper and buried the ball into the back left corner for the game-winner.

Dominican outshot Holy Names 21-13 and had a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Kiser and Meza both led the Penguins with five shots apiece and each had three on goal. A match after notching a career-high nine saves, Ramos made seven saves and held on for the win to improve to 3-3-4. HNU's Alyssa Lopez took the loss to fall to 1-7-1.
