OAKLAND, Calif. — A first-half goal proved the difference in a disappointing 1-0 loss to Holy Names for the Dominican University of California men's soccer team.
With the loss, Dominican falls to under .500 (2-8-1/2-3-1 PacWest) in conference play while HNU won its first match of the season (1-8-1/1-5-0 PacWest).
Holy Names put the pressure on in the first half with nine shots before halftime. The aggressiveness paid off in the form of the match's lone goal. In the 44th minute, Yohannes Harish dished off to Antonia Chavarria, who broke through the Penguins defense for the goal.
Dominican had six shots in the second half and attempted a pair of corner kicks but were unable to convert.
Luke Raley's shot in the 55th minute was saved.
Jordan Zamora had two of his shots blocked, and another saved.
Chase Goulart also had a shot blocked in the 72nd minute.
Bryan Juarez's shot in the 87th minute was high. At every possible turn, the Hawks stalled and slowed the match down with slow throw-ins and goal kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Christian Lathrop took the loss for the Penguins. Senior
Oscar O'Con had a save in a scoreless second half of work.
