OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team edged Holy Names 3-1 (25-12, 27-25, 28-30, 25-22) on Saturday for the Penguins's fourth consecutive win.

The Penguins move to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in PacWest action while Holy Names falls to 1-16 and 0-9 in conference play. With a 3-2 Concordia loss to California Baptist, the Penguins move into a tie with the Eagles for third place.

The Penguins started dominantly with a blowout in set one thanks to  a 14-4 start and 6-0 finish. The Penguins erased a five-point deficit in set two and faced set point but two more Hawks errors gave the Penguins set point and Hannah Smith dished an assist to Brittany Latigue, who threw down the kill to give Dominican a 2-0 lead. In set three, the Penguins blew set point four times — at 24-22, 26-25, 27-26, and 28-27. The Hawks scored the final three points to set a fourth set. Three Dominican errors and three HNU service aces saw Dominican facing an 8-3 deficit and possible fifth set. The Penguins climbed back into the set and tied it at 11-11, then took the lead on the next play on a kill from Aimee Steinwand. HNU erased Dominican's 22-17 lead and tied the set at 22-22 but a ball handling error, followed by two more Steinwand kills, closed the match out.

Steinwand and Madeline Powelson led the Penguins with 12 kills apiece and each made it a double-double with 16 digs apiece. Latigue added 11 kills and fellow sophomore middle blocker Kate Even had eight. Amanda Lee led all players with 35 digs. Smith dished out 44 assists in the win.

Melissa Munley led all players with 18 kills for the Hawks and had 12 digs for the double-double. Heather Emory added a team-high 22 digs.

Dominican returns to the Conlan Center on Thursday, Oct. 13 versus Notre Dame de Namur for Think Pink Night.
