SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team endured a physical match against Fresno Pacific that ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw on Friday.
The Penguins (2-7-1/2-2-1 PacWest) struck first, in the 33rd minute, on a pass from
Luke Raley into the center of the box. The ball bounced a couple of times before
Jordan Zamora settled it, then threaded the ball past a defender and over FPU goalkeeper Matias Fernandez's right shoulder into the back of the net. Dominican's passing looked much less sharp and was outshot 11-3 by the Sunbirds (3-5-2/2-2-1 PacWest) in the second half. Still, the lead lasted until the 66th minute when Benjamin Cowdrill headed in a ball off of Joao Ravasio's free kick.
Play grew more and more physical from that point. With two yellow cards already in the books in the second half, three more were entered by the end of regulation.
Jorge Chedraui, who had three shots on goal for the reigning PacWest champs, had a point-blank shot in the 93rd minute that appeared like it would be the difference but a diving save by
Christian Lathrop preserved the tie. In the 97th minute, Fernandez and
Austen McGregor collided. Fernandez was helped off the field and Brandon Gettman was pressed into duty for the Sunbirds. None of the four shots he saw were on frame.
In double overtime, after two more yellow cards were tallied, FPU's Jose Segura was issued a red card, which gave the Penguins a man advantage for the final six minutes. However, Chedraui got tangled up with
Mark Caliguire to the right of FPU's goal with 45 seconds remaining in double overtime. The two were issued yellow cards on the play, at which point Chedraui got physical and was issued a red card for his actions. The match was called with time still on the clock.
The Penguins showed their commitment to the fight against pediatric cancer as they wore gold laces for Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer®, an initiative of Go4TheGoal. All funds stay in the community where they are raised to support local children, with the funds from this match benefitting UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
