ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team notched a big road win on Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Dixie State.
The Penguins (7-5-4/6-3-2 PacWest) sit in sixth place with two matches to go but have 20 points in PacWest action, only one point behind Dixie State (9-6-0/7-3-0 PacWest) and Concordia (10-2-4/6-2-3 PacWest).
Dixie State attempted 21 shots with 13 shots on goal while Dominican attempted eight shots and placed six on frame. The lone goal of the match came in the 51st minute on a header by
Mariah Meza. The junior's fifth goal of the season came on a pass from senior
Stephanie Pawek.
Saturday's win tested the Penguins' depth, as they were without regulars
Katrina Cline and
Ivy Torres. Six Penguins were tasked with complete-game efforts, including the back line of
Alyssa Campbell,
Keira Dagy, Pawek,
Sami Clausen, plus goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos. Ramos made a career-high 13 saves and earned her fifth shutout of the season.
The Penguins have matched their most wins in an 18-match season with two matches to go. Dominican last won seven matches in 2012 and 2013. The Penguins won eight matches in 2009, their first year in the PacWest, when the NCAA had a 20-match season. The Penguins could notch their first winning season in the Division II era on Thurdsday, Nov. 3 when Chaminade (3-10-1/3-7-1 PacWest) visits. The Silverswords are not to be overlooked though, as they recently upset Point Loma 1-0. Dominican will also be without
Michelle Li though after she was issued a red card in the 81st minute. The Penguins finish the season against BYU-Hawaii (5-8-2/4-6-1 PacWest) on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the final soccer match for BYU-Hawaii, as the entire athletics program is being discontinued after the 2016-17 season. Both matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
