HONOLULU — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team battled but ran out of steam in a back-and-forth five-set loss (25-17, 17-25, 28-26, 22-25, 15-8) to Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday.
Madeline Powelson and
Aimee Steinwand recorded double-doubles for the Penguins (13-7/9-3 PacWest) but it wasn't enough as HPU traded places with the Penguins in the standings (12-7/8-2 PacWest). The loss drops Dominican from a virtual tie for second to fifth place.
Powelson and Steinwand both finished with 13 kills and and 14 digs.
Brittany Latigue and
Cat Thomason both added eight kills apiece. Senior libero
Amanda Lee had 10 digs, though that was a season-low.
Pomai Recca had a match-high 24 kills for HPU and added 18 digs. Amanda Acosta led all players with 20 digs.
The Penguins recovered from a slow start in set one and evened the match but fell behind after a marathon 28-26 set thre. The Penguins edged HPU in the fourth set but the Sharks scored the final five points of the match for the win.
Dominican closes out its three-match trip on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Hawai'i Hilo. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. (10 p.m. Pacific.).
