HILO, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team topped Hawai'i Hilo 3-1 (30-28, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19) on Saturday night for a 2-1 road trip through Hawaii.
The win marks the first-ever winning Hawaiian road trip for the Penguins dating back to joining the PacWest for the 2009 season. Dominican (14-7/10-3 PacWest) used a balanced attack to earn the win. Dominican jumped out to a 2-0 lead and closed things out with a strong fourth set after dropping a close third set. The Penguins trailed in set one but rallied when facing set point at 24-22. A
Madeline Powelson kill and a Marley Strand-Nicolaisen attack error evened the match, then the teams traded points until Dominican strung together consecutive points on a kill from sophomore Kate and a service ace from setter
Hannah Smith. The Penguins sprinted out to a 12-6 lead in set two and staved off a late Vulcans (7-10/5-7 PacWest) run that trimmed the lead to one. UHH grabbed an early 10-5 advantage in set three and the Penguins would pull within a point before the Vulcans pulled away again. Dominican used a 6-1 run to turn a 9-8 deficit into a 13-10 advantage that forced the Vulcans to call timeout. The Penguins never trailed again.
Seven Penguins recorded at least one kill and four were in double digits. The Penguins also combined for 99 digs and had five players tally double digits. Redshirt junior
Susanna Pilkerton led the Penguins with a season-high 14 kills. Even matched a career-high 13 kills while
Aimee Steinwand and Powelson both added double-doubles. Powelson had 12 kills and 19 digs while Steinwand had 11 kills and 17 digs. Smith dished out 52 assists and senior libero
Amanda Lee recorded 32 digs. Lee remains second in the PacWest in digs (5.49 dps).
Strand-Nicolaisen and Haylee Roberts each had a match-high 17 kills for the Vulcans.
The win puts the Penguins in fourth place behind the three teams they have lost to in conference action: California Baptist, Concordia, and Hawai'i Pacific. Dominican has seven matches to go with the next one coming on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Notre Dame de Namur (6-15/4-9 PacWest).
