SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A pair of late headers from
Mariah Meza helped the Dominican University of California women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Academy of Art on Sunday, giving the Penguins their third consecutive victory.
Dominican (5-4-4/4-2-2 PacWest) pelted shots at the goal all day and outshot Academy of Art (1-10-1/1-5-1 PacWest) 21-7. The Penguins put nine of those shots on goal, compared to just two by the Urban Knights. Dominican dominated possession and it paid off late in the match. After a scoreless first half, the Penguins began the second half with half a dozen shots over a span of 15 minutes. In the 80th minute, Dominican fired off three more shots but the Urban Knights held their ground. Then, in the 82nd minute, a corner kick from senior
Stephanie Pawek on the left side found the head of
Mariah Meza, who headed the ball past the near post past goalkeeper Morgan Wirz. Meza, who had six shots total and four on goal, put the game away just two minutes later. In a nearly identical play, Pawek launched a kick a little further from the box and Meza bent the ball into the back left of the frame.
Dominican's back line made an easy day of work for freshman goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos, who recorded one save and earned her fourth shutout of the season.
Though Sunday's match was played on Kennelly Field at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex, the match was considered a road match for the Penguins as it was moved to San Rafael due to inclement weather in San Francisco. The Penguins remain unbeated against the Urban Knights on Kennelly Field with a 4-0-3 mark.
The Penguins will now embark on the second Southern Californian road trip of the season. This time, Dominican will visit fourth-place Concordia (8-0-4/4-0-3 PacWest) on Thursday, Oct. 20 and California Baptist (5-4-3/4-1-2 PacWest) on Saturday, Oct. 22. Dominican is currently tied for fifth place with CBU with 14 points.
