SAN DIEGO — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team scored quickly, then late for a crucial 2-1 road victory at Point Loma on Saturday.
Point Loma (2-3-2/1-3-0 PacWest) started quickly with a corner kick but it was the Penguins (2-7-0/2-2-0 PacWest) who got the upper hand early with a goal right before the clock struck two minutes. Sophomore defender
Connor Murphy settled a ball that bounced into the box, then dished off to forward
Austen McGregor for the junior's third goal of the season. The goal kept Dominican in front for the next 22 minutes until Keyran Kelly whipped a ball across the front of the goal to Indiana Fuller, who poked the ball in.
Some late Penguins teamwork in the 69th minute lifted the Penguins to victory.
Luke Raley passed off to
Matt Case, who had a 1v1 against Point Loma goalkeeper Dylan Roberts but dished off to
Alex Herrera for the score. The Sea Lions pressed on right after but Jorge Navarro's shot less than a minute later sailed high and Will Cline's shot in the 71st minute was blocked. A header by Eduardo Gallardo in the 83rd minute sailed high and other scoring opportunities for Navarro and Gallardo in the final five minutes also proved fruitless.
Sophomore
Christian Lathrop earned hist first college victory and made saves, plus had help from his back line, which was credited with a pair of team saves.
The win puts Dominican in a four-way tie for sixth place with half a dozen points. The Penguins host Fresno Pacific (3-4-1/2-2-0 PacWest) on Friday, Oct. 7 at noon, followed by the women at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and pay-per-view video will be available at
