Penguins go wire-to-wire for third straight win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team earned its third straight victory on Thursday with an 89-60 victory over Holy Names.

The Penguins (8-4/4-1) continued their best start in a decade and led from wire-to-wire. Much like Tuesday's big third quarter, Dominican laid it on in the fourth quarter and posted a 25-7 quarter to run away with the game. Natalie Diaz scored the first four points of the night and the Penguins led by 10 less than five minutes into play thanks to seven straight points from Taylor Donnot. The lead stood at 47-32 by the half.

In just 19 minutes of action, sophomore Sandra Ikeora recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. The sophomore is now averaging 13.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Donnot scored 15 points in 20 minutes before she fouled out late in the third quarter. Alyssa Lorenzo came off the bench for 10 points and all 11 Penguins who played scored.

Dominican shot 47.9 percent (35-of-73) on the field and scored 50 points in the paint. Meanwhile, the Penguins limited the Hawks (3-11/2-4 PacWest) to 33.3 percent (21-of-63), including 25.8 percent (8-of-31) in the second half. HNU was led by 14 points and seven rebounds from Garysha Youngblood. Taylor Krouse added 13 points and Chariaha Scott came off the bench for 12 points.

The Penguins saw the return of senior Jessy Marshall, who has been sidelined all season with a thumb injury. She scored on her first field goal attempt of the season. However, the Penguins also saw fellow senior Melissa Boscarino go down with a knee injury two minutes before halftime. Her status is unknown at this time.

The win evens the all-time matchup at 5-5 dating back to 2009 with the two teams set to meet again on Jan. 29. First, the Penguins host Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. That is Gold Rush Night sponsored by Gold Rush Jewelers. Free t-shirts will be given away and fans are encouraged to wear gold to the games.
