Lorenzo's big third quarter lifts Penguins to fourth straight win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game with another wire-to-wire victory, this time notching an 89-62 PacWest win Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday night in the Conlan Center.

After Dominican (9-4/5-1 PacWest) took a 42-35 lead into halftime, Alyssa Lorenzo singlehandedly opened the game up in the second half. The freshman guard, who earned her first career start in place of injured senior Melissa Boscarino, got off to a slow start but couldn't miss in the third quarter. She scored 13 points and made all four of her three-point attempts in the period. Lorenzo finished with five three-pointers and a career-high 19 points. As a team, Dominican drained 10 three-pointers on 41.7 percent (10-of-24) and overall shot 50.7 percent (34-of-67) from the field. The Penguins used a balanced attack and worked the ball inside for another 40 points. 23 of those came from sophomore Sandra Ikeora, who led all players with 15 rebounds to notch back-to-back double-doubles and her fourth of the season. The Penguins all won the rebounding battle 46-26, which resulted in 20 second-chance points while allowing only three. Dominican led by as large as 31 before the final buzzer sounded.

Senior Allyssa Weatherd scored 13 points, pulled down six rebounds, dished out three assists, and had a pair of steals. Junior Carly Holboke added a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points. Junior Taylor Donnot scored nine points with six rebounds. Freshman Natalie Diaz matched a career-high nine rebounds.

Forward Kirsten Liana and guard Marinel Alcantara led the Argonauts (1-13/0-6 PacWest) with 14 points apiece. Liana had a team-high eight rebounds.

The Penguins have won their last six games versus the Argonauts. Dominican will now head to Hawaii for a three-game road trip. Dominican begins the trip versus Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday, Jan. 14 and will also face BYU-Hawaii and Chamainde.
