OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team cruised to an 87-68 PacWest victory at Holy Names on Friday night in Tobin Gymnasium.
Dominican (13-6/9-3 PacWest) was led by 29 points from
Allyssa Weatherd.
Taylor Donnot poured in 20 points and
Sandra Ikeora added 16 points. Those three also led the team with eight rebounds apiece.
The Penguins got to the rim at ease all night. Outside of three three-pointers, Dominican scored all but one field goal inside of the key for a staggering 64 points. Defensively, the Penguins smothered HNU (6-15/5-8 PacWest) and kep the Hawks scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of action. HNU broke the seal with a three-pointer with 5:09 to go in the quarter but Dominican scorched the nets with a 64.7 percent field goal percentage in the first half and by led comfortably by halftime, 49-22.
The Penguins cooled off in the second half but still finished with a 52.9 percentage. Dominican led by as large as 30, though HNU trimmed the lead to a dozen late in the third quarter. The Hawks would get no closer than 14 in the final 10 minutes.
Tatiana Howard led the Hawks with 14 points and eight rebounds. Garysha Youngblood added 13 points and Chariaha Scott scored 10 points in the loss.
The Penguins have won their last six games against the Hawks. Dominican returns home to the Conlan Center on Monday night to face UH Hilo at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free for all fans as part of Academic Night. At halftime of the men's game, PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue will present Dominican President Mary B. Marcy with the 2014-15 Academic Achievement Award, the program's record sixth consecutive award, and the 2014-15 Make-A-Wish Award.
