Women's basketball sets program win mark in Division II era

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team used a strong second half to record an 85-54 PacWest victory over visiting UH Hilo on Monday night in the Conlan Center.

Junior Carly Holboke matched a season-high 22 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to lead the Penguins won their 14th game of the season, the most by a Penguins team in the NCAA Division II era (beginning in 2009). The Penguins improve to 14-6 overall and 10-3 in PacWest Play. The Penguins are in fourth place behind three teams tied for first place. The Vulcans fall to 5-12 and 5-7 in PacWest action.

Senior Allyssa Weatherd, coming off a PacWest Player of the Week performance, added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sandra Ikeora got into early foul trouble but still proved to be a factor with 15 points. Natalie Diaz and Ashley Sorensen grabbed seven rebounds apiece for the Penguins.

Dominican started to pull away midway through the third quarter. Tied 45-45, Dominican finished the quarter on a 19-3 run and mounted a 64-58 lead. UHH stopped the bleeding with a Sydney Mercer layup to begin the fourth quarter but the Penguins quickly made it a 20-point lead thanks to a Taylor Donnot three-pointer. The Penguins kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard for the final five minutes of the game and finished the game on an 11-0 run. UHH was limited to 17 points in the second half.

The first half was a much tighter contest. The Penguins' led 41-37 headed into intermission and led by no more than five despite shooting 50 percent (31-of-65) in the half. The Vulcans shot 41.2 percent (21-of-61) in the first half but wore down and shot just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) in the second half.
