SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team saw its seven-game home winning streak snapped by No. 25 Azusa Pacific in an 88-81 PacWest loss on Monday night.
The Penguins (12-6/8-3 PacWest) actually had a better shooting percentage on the night at 47.6 percent (30-of-63) but 34 of the Cougars' (16-3/10-1 PacWest) 75 field goals were three-pointers, 12 of which counted.
Senior
Allyssa Weatherd scored a team-high 22 points and added eight rebonds. She leads NCAA Division II in field goal percentage (57 percent) and is fourth in the PacWest in scoring at 18.2 points per game. Sophomore
Sandra Ikeora added 14 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Juinor
Taylor Donnot chipped in 13 points, freshman
Alyssa Lorenzo had 11 points off the bench, and fellow freshman
Natalie Diaz added 10 points.
The first-place Cougars were powered by senior forward Kelly Hardeman, who poured in 33 points on 13-of-23 shooting and added 14 rebounds for the double-double. Starters Cydnie Jones and Maggie Dumphy added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Aside from a second-chance bucket by Weatherd to begin the game, Azusa Pacific controlled the game early. A Donnot layup to begin the second quarter gave Dominican another lead, 18-17, but it was shortlived. The Cougars grabbed the lead back on a Hardeman three-pointer and soon led by eight. The Penguins trailed 45-40 at the half but saw the deficit slip to double digits for much of the third quarter. Dominican would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
On Friday, Jan. 29, Dominican will head to Holy Names in Oakland for a 7:30 p.m. contest before returning home on Monday, Feb. 1 to begin another two-game homestand. Monday is also Academic Night, where PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue will present Dominican President Mary Marcy with the program's sixth consecutive Academic Achievement Award.
