Penguins notch back-to-back 30-point wins

HONOLULU — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team made it back-to-back 30-point wins on Monday evening with a 97-67 PacWest victory at Chaminade.

As a team, the Penguins (11-5/7-2 PacWest) drained 50.7 percent (35-of-69) of their field goals. Allyssa Weatherd led all players with 23 points and eight rebounds. Sandra Ikeora finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Alyssa Lorenzo came off the bench for 15 points, a pair of assists, and a pair of steals. Alanna Scott added a career-high 10 points.

The Penguins started slow and led just 19-17 at the end of the first quarter. The Silverswords (4-9/4-5 PacWest) tied the game to begin the second quarter but Ashley Sorensen's jumper at the other end gave Dominican the lead for the final 29:38 of the game. That kicked off a 14-1 run and the Penguins lever led by fewer than 10 points the rest of the way. Dominican did not allow a field goal in the last four minutes of the first half and the lead sootd at 51-27 by the half.

Sandra Ikeora started the second half with two quick baskets to make it a 28-point game. Chaminade kept fighting though and Dominican didn't make it a 30-point game until the last five minutes of the game. The lead grew to as large as 35 in the final three minutes.

Chaminade was held to 36.1 percent (22-of-61) shooting. Courtney Kaupa led the Silverwords with 13 points. Sabrina Angle and Lilia Maio added 12 points apiece in the loss.

The Penguins will now return home to the mainland and to the Conlan Center. Dominican hosts Concordia Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. That is also Warriors Night.
