Three Penguins score 20-plus in 30-point win

LAIE, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team got off to a slow start but exploded in the second and third quarters for a 97-67 PacWest victory at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday night in the Cannon Activities Center.

The Penguins (10-5/6-2 PacWest) were careless with the basketball early on and after a quarter found themselves in a 20-18 hole. However, the Penguins started making better passes and worked it inside and outside. Dominican went to work and outscored the Seasiders (6-7/3-5 PacWest) 29-17 in the second quarter to take a 47-37 halftime lead. Sandra Ikeora had 17 points by the half and Carly Holboke followed with 10 of her own.

There was no letdown and despite a Seasiders buzzer-beater to end the third quarter, the Penguins outscored them 36-15 to take an 83-52 lead into the final 10 minutes. By the end of the game, Dominican had outscored its opponent 52-18 in the paint and scored 34 points off 27 turnovers.

The Penguins shot 47.4 percent for the game led by Ikeora. After an uncharacteristic night on Thursday, the sophomore bounced back nicely with a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds. Senior Allyssa Weatherd added 23 points and cleaned up the glass with a season-high 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Holboke added a season-high 22 points with five three-pointers. Ashley Sorensen scored six points and pulled in six rebounds. Taylor Donnot had career-highs of nine assists and four steals. Natalie Diaz dished out a career-high eight assists with six rebounds.

Jiashan Cui, the only player in double digits for the Seasiders, scored a career-high 29 points. Mata Tonga had a team-best seven rebounds.

The win was the largest margin of victory for the Penguins over the Seasiders. The game may also mark the last game played between the two teams at the Cannon Activities Center. The Penguins are not scheduled to return there in 2016-17 and in 2014 the Seasiders announced that they will phase out NCAA athletics. Dominican will look to finish the road trip with another win when they head Chaminade on Monday, Jan. 18 for a 5:30 p.m. PacWest contest.
