Women's soccer ties CSUSB with pair of late goals

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team rallied back for a 2-2 tie at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday thanks to a pair of late goals in regulation from senior Lauren Gollnick.

Gollnick scored twice quickly in the 84th and 85th minutes to force overtime. Sophomore Mariah Meza fed Gollnick a ball in, where she shot parallel from the goalkeeper's left side and placed it in the far corner. Less than two minutes later, Gollnick slammed a shot off of the post, and freshman Rachel Stowell was there for the rebound. She passed back to Gollnick, who scored from five yards out to even the match.

The Penguins gave up two early goals in the sixth and 12th minutes from Cal State San Bernardino's Alyssa Campa and Melaine Aguayo. The Penguins had first half shots on goal by freshman Lily Dubuc and junior Stephanie Pawek but both were repelled by Coyotes goalkeeper Megan Vina. Dominican picked up the intensity in the second half and it clearly paid off. Gollnick had a shot in the 48th minute and Meza added one of her own in the 54th minute.

The Penguins were also the dominant team in overtime and outshot CSUSB 5-3 with the closest opportunity coming in the 94th minute. Sophomore Katrina Cline had her shot blocked and Meza ended up with the ball only to have her shot saved. Aguayo attempted all three shots, which went wide, for the Coyotes.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Tassano logged all 110 minutes and recorded the draw in her first collegiate start. Vina also played the entire game for CSUSB.

The pair of goals moved Gollnick past Mckenna (Kimball) Coletti into sole possession of second place in career goals scored by a Dominican player in the Division II era. She is now three goals off the mark set by Julianna Bratsberg's 17 (However, Bratsberg had 29 total career goals, 12 of which came in 2008 while Dominican was still a member of the NAIA).

The Penguins host their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12 when Northwest Nazarene comes calling. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. on Kennelly Field at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex.
